PogoPlank: iPhone Springboard Replacement

PogoPlank is a full springboard replacement app for all jailbroken devices. It gives you the ability to categorize all of your apps into 5 easy to navigate folders in a wheel configuration. It is available for $1.99 in the Cydia store. Setting up the device for the first time is a little tedious, but with a very easy to navigate interface and easy to understand settings, you’ll be up and running in no time.

This idea, and app, is still in its infancy, so it’s not without its downfalls. Very minor things, but these could be a turn-off for some users. The themes are a little on the boring side, but I’m sure as more people put their hands on the template, that’ll change quickly.

You can use WinterBoard with this, but it only changes the icons, not the PogoPlank folders. The scroll wheel is a little choppy, not the smooth scrolling you would expect, and have gotten used to from the iPhone/iPod touch. The are a few other minor inconveniences such as, no badges on the icons to show new notifications. So apps that get constant updates, like messages, mail, phone and IM apps, need to stay in the dock, unless you use something like status notifier. There’s also no way to link to the stock camera app. And maybe find a way to keep the keyboard from coming up/disable the stock spotlight search.

Now I don’t want this to be negative at all. It’s a new way of doing things, so It’s going to have issues to work through. The developers are very open to your ideas and encourage you to contact them. I do really like the way you can organize all of your apps to a very clean and easy to understand interface. It is way faster than categories. Stacks V3 still works, so thats a little work around for the camera app problem.

All in all, I think this is going to be a huge improvement to the springboard, as soon as they work through the few little bugs. Is it worth the $1.99? I think so. Even if its just an investment to the developers that they will continue to improve on this idea.
