SpaceX Sent NASA Astronatus Into Orbit Powered by Linux

Powered by Linux, SpaceX successfully delivered NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley into orbit

Even if you’re a macOS/iOS user or a Windows user, you are using Linux every single day. And you, probably, don’t even know it. How the hell is that even possible? Let me break it down for you. If you… :

  1. Use ANY Android based device, including eReaders
  2. Use a virtual assistant like Alexa
  3. Use TiVo, Roku or a SmartTV
  4. If you’re gaming using SteamOS
  5. Use social media websites/apps and basically the entire internet ( almost )
  6. Use retail and go through the points of sale
  7. Took a flight? The Federal Aviation Administration operates on Linux. So does the New York Stock Exchange, the Pentagon, Library of Congress, House of Representatives, Senate and the White House.
  8. Used the in-flight entertainment
  9. Use smart devices and have a smart home
  10. Use the infotaiment in your car
  11. Have a router
  12. Use iCloud

… then you are using Linux.

On May 30, history was made when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon successfully delivered NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley into orbit. What is less known about the event is that the launch was powered by Linux.

The Falcon 9’s onboard operating system is a stripped-down Linux running on three ordinary dual-core x86 processors. The flight software itself runs separately on each processor and is written in C/C++.

The Dragon spacecraft also runs Linux with flight software written in C++. The ship’s touchscreen interface is rendered using Chromium and JavaScript. If something were to go wrong with the interface, the astronauts have physical buttons to control the spacecraft.

However, SpaceX isn’t the first to bring the power of the open source kernel and software into the orbit. In 2013, the International Space Station reportedly switched from Windows to Linux. Not to mentions that NASA runs on Linux and even the Astrobee robots, that were deployed to the ISS not too long ago, run on Linux.

Tor Browser Makes it Easier to Find .Onion Addresses

Website publishers now can advertise their onion service to Tor users

The latest update of the Tor Browser, v9.5, introduced a new opt-in feature that allows desktop users to automatically select the .onion version of a website if that website has one available.

Website publishers now can advertise their onion service to Tor users by adding an HTTP header. When visiting a website that has both an .onion address and Onion Location enabled via Tor Browser, users will be prompted about the onion service version of the site and will be asked to opt-in to upgrade to the onion service on their first use.

The feature can also be turned on or off in the Privacy & Security tab of the browser’s settings page.

To learn more about these new features and everything that’s new in Tor 9.5 check out the official announcement page.

This is just a quick post to let you know that Apple Music on the web is no longer in beta. So, starting today, you don’t need iTunes or Apple Music app anymore to enjoy Apple Music. The web app is officially out of beta.

This is particuallary good news for Linux users because, up until late last year when Apple released the web app in beta, they were out of luck since there’s no iTunes for Linux. Now, all that’s required is a web browser. Firefox should do just fine.

To keep this short, if you’re an Apple Music user as well as a macOS, Linux or Windows, starting today, all you need is to point your web browser to https://music.apple.com/.

You Can Login To Facebook With The Wrong Password

typing the wrong password will still allow you to login to Facebook

I’ll be honest with you. I don’t use Facebook much. I’ll log in once in a while to see what my 400+ “close friends” are up to, scroll twice and log out.  But usually I get on Facebook just to do a quick post on FSM’s page.

You might care more about Facebook than I do. And don’t worry… next time you log in, if you type in the wrong password, you’ll still get in.

Here’s the deal. Let’s say your FB password is “password”. You can type “1password” or “password1” ( or replace “1” with any other character ) and you’ll still be able to get in.

I’m not a security expert so I can’t explain why is this allowed. But in my book, no matter what the reason is, it’s a security flaw. I’m also a bit paranoid ( maybe too strong of a word ) and my first thought was…. OK, once people will figure it out it will be all over the news and then Facebook will prompt users to change their passwords.

Once a user changes his/her password, next step will be to “upload a clear photo of your face“. And I suppose you can figure it out why they want you to do that. To keep you safe. Wink wink.

To be clear, I’m not saying that’s the reason behind it. I’m only saying that this was my first thought. So in the meantime, you might want to turn on two-factor authentication by going to Settings > Security and Login. You might also want to use the “Recovery Codes” for 2FA, but if you want to use the SMS option, do me a favor and use a prepaid SIM not your actual number.

Download “Reflection”. iPhone X Exclusive Ringtone

download the exclusive iPhone X ringtones – Reflection

I’ve always had my iPhone on vibrate. It was great. At least until the iPhone vibrate intensity started to be very very week.

This happened around the iPhone 6s release. Coincidently Apple released the Apple Watch the same year. Maybe the Apple Watch is just an alert extension for the iPhone?

Now that I can’t have my iPhone silenced, I need a ringtone. I can’t stand Marimba. 99.9% of iPhones use the default ringtone. You never know whose phone is ringing? Is it mine? No idea, can’t f*cking feel it vibrate.

So right now I use the first 40 seconds of Wojciech Kilar’s “Corso” song from The Ninth Gate soundtrack.

But this is going to change, because the iPhone X comes with a new exclusive ringtone called “Reflection”. You can download it here. Already an .m4r file, so just sync it to your phone via iTunes.
