Skype Enables 3G Calling On iPhone

Skype finally released the new app that supports calling over 3G, but the company plans to charge an additional monthly fee.

A few months ago we told you that Skype will bring SILK audio codec over 3G. Well they finally released the new app that supports calling over 3G, but the company plans to charge an additional monthly fee.

What’s New in Version 2.0.0

  • Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until the end of 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
  • Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS, iPad and 2nd & 3rd generation iPod touch.
  • Enhanced call quality indicator.
  • Improved start-up time.

Skype To Bring SILK Audio Codec Over 3G

Although Apple enabled VoIP over 3G a week ago, and providers like Fring took advantage right away, Skype is delaying their update.

A week ago, Apple enabled VoIP over 3G and services like Fring had Skype working over 3G right away. Skype, is delaying their services over 3G for now, but the good news is that for the latest iTouch and iPhone users ( devices with faster ARM processors ) Skype will enable the SILK audio codec which allows CD quality sound on Skype-to-Skype Calls.
