SongRec is an open source client that uses Shazam’s audio fingerprinting algorithm and can identify a song from an audio file or by using the microphone.

Facebook has announced today that it’s updating its iOS and Android app with a Shazam-like feature. The new update brings a new music, movie, and TV show recognition feature that if turned on will automatically detect what’s playing while you’re writing your status update.

That’s why Shazam will receive an update today that brings a new UI placing real-time lyrics from and center right next to the video for the song you just tagged. The new app also make it easier to buy and/or stream content. The update should be available in the App Store shortly…

There’s still no corresponding Android update, but iPhone owners can start producing the soundtrack of their lives after a quick trip to the App Store.
