“Slide to Unlock” Patent Invalidated by German Court

As part of an ongoing German patent struggle, Motorola on Thursday won a ruling from the country’s Federal Patent Court, which said found all claims of Apple’s “slide to unlock” user interface property invalid, though the decision can be appealed.

Kicking Them While They’re Down – Apple Sues Kodak

Apple has filed a case with the U.S Bankruptcy Court in N.Y stating that it intends to file a complaint against Kodak at the International Trade Commission and a corresponding suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan based on patent-infringement claims.
“Apple requests express authority from this court before it initiates the actions out of an abundance of caution,” the company’s lawyers wrote in the filing.
The allegations state that Kodak infringes on patents that Apple says cover technologies used in printers, digital cameras and digital picture frames.

Apple Sues Motorola In U.S Over Qualcomm Patent

Reuters reports that Apple has filed a lawsuit in San Diego against Motorola over usage of a Qualcomm patent. The Cupertino-based tech giant argues that the lawsuits currently in action in Mannheim, Germany are in breach of the license between Motorola Mobility and Qualcomm as the patent to which the arguments pertain have also been licensed to Apple.

Motorola’s German lawsuit is in direct breach of a Patent Licensing Agreement between Motorola and Qualcomm. As a Qualcomm customer, Apple is a third-party beneficiary of that contract.

The patent in question is related to the usage of the Qualcomm MDM6610 baseband chip that Apple uses in the CDMA-compatible versions of its iPhone 4S.

That was fast. Just hours after word began to spread that Apple was forced to pull most of its 3G devices from its German online store following an injunction awarded to Motorola, the iPhone maker successfully had the ruling suspended and has recommenced sales.

Apple Loses Patent Case Against Motorola In Mannheim

 

Last week we informed you of a case in which Apple faced Samsung over patent issues relating to the 3G connection implemented within the iPhone and 3G iPad devices. These issues between Apple and Samsung have spanned over the past several weeks and are sure to persist for the next few weeks too.

This week, the Cupertino company has been forced to remove the iPhone 3G[s], iPhone 4, and iPad 3G products from its online store. The news comes from Florian Mueller over at FOSSpatents after he attended a hearing which saw Motorola beat Apple in hotly-contested court proceedings.

Apple Wins Case Two of Five in Mannheim

I’m sure you all know of the constant patent war raging between various tech companies & their competitors. Of all involved, none are more fierce than the differences (or lack of) between Apple & Samsung.

Judge Andreas Voss from the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany ruled in favour of Apple in the second of five 3G/UMTS patent suits levied against the tech giant by Samsung, reports Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents.

Mueller, who attended the hearing on Friday, explains the decision may be based on the validity of the specifics regarding the case, and also notes that Samsung’s two losses thus far don’t necessarily mean the company’s three pending claims will be unsuccessful.

New Apple Patent: Facebook Integration Into iPhone OS

This report covers Apple’s “Workflow” patent that is indeed presented as a possible future iPhone OS upgrade consideration.

Last Wednesday the Business Insider reported that a mobile industry insider confirmed to them that Apple was building Facebook features into iPhone OS 4.Perhaps “Apple’s new hooks into Facebook,” reported Frommer “will make this sync process part of the phone’s operating system and not just a feature of the Facebook app.”
