The San Jose Mercury News reports that Apple has been granted planning permission to commence construction on what it describes as a “new prototype” Apple Store on 340 University Avenue in Palo Alto. That’s only a block away from the company’s current store at 451 University Avenue, which is expected to close down after the new one is opened.

Apple has a new window display in their flagship Palo Alto store that is probably the coolest one we’ve ever seen. It features an iPhone on a stand in front of a large display, with iPhone apps zipping toward you as though you were traversing the App Store in the Millennium Falcon. What is one of iPhone’s strongest points? Well, you guessed it: apps/appstore. And Apple knows really really well how to (still) promote their iPhone thorough some create and absolutely gorgeous ideas.
