A Behind the Scenes Look at SpaceX’s New Space Suit

SpaceX’s space suits are designed for optimum functionality with the Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Check out a rare behind the scenes look at the development of SpaceX‘s new space suit. The same suit worn by NASA Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley during their historic mission to the International Space Station in May.

SpaceX Sent NASA Astronatus Into Orbit Powered by Linux

Powered by Linux, SpaceX successfully delivered NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley into orbit

Even if you’re a macOS/iOS user or a Windows user, you are using Linux every single day. And you, probably, don’t even know it. How the hell is that even possible? Let me break it down for you. If you… :

  1. Use ANY Android based device, including eReaders
  2. Use a virtual assistant like Alexa
  3. Use TiVo, Roku or a SmartTV
  4. If you’re gaming using SteamOS
  5. Use social media websites/apps and basically the entire internet ( almost )
  6. Use retail and go through the points of sale
  7. Took a flight? The Federal Aviation Administration operates on Linux. So does the New York Stock Exchange, the Pentagon, Library of Congress, House of Representatives, Senate and the White House.
  8. Used the in-flight entertainment
  9. Use smart devices and have a smart home
  10. Use the infotaiment in your car
  11. Have a router
  12. Use iCloud

… then you are using Linux.

On May 30, history was made when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon successfully delivered NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley into orbit. What is less known about the event is that the launch was powered by Linux.

The Falcon 9’s onboard operating system is a stripped-down Linux running on three ordinary dual-core x86 processors. The flight software itself runs separately on each processor and is written in C/C++.

The Dragon spacecraft also runs Linux with flight software written in C++. The ship’s touchscreen interface is rendered using Chromium and JavaScript. If something were to go wrong with the interface, the astronauts have physical buttons to control the spacecraft.

However, SpaceX isn’t the first to bring the power of the open source kernel and software into the orbit. In 2013, the International Space Station reportedly switched from Windows to Linux. Not to mentions that NASA runs on Linux and even the Astrobee robots, that were deployed to the ISS not too long ago, run on Linux.

OKO: iPad Puzzle Game Uses Imagery From NASA Database [video]

A graphic puzzle game for the iPad, OKO, uses images from the NASA database.

OKO is a puzzle video game for iPad. The goal is to reconstruct an image by stopping rotating circles cut out from this image. For each level, the animated pieces draw increasingly complex patterns. The challenge is to be attentive to image juxtapositions in order to stop the circles movement at the right moment.

Astronauts Are Passionate About Macs and iPhone, But NASA Is Windows Based

former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao, Mac and iPhone fan, who “visited” space 4 times, including a 6 and a half months “visit”. Today, Leroy is the Executive Vice President of Excalibur Almaz, a commercial venture that hopes to be putting space tourists into true space journeys by sometime in the next few years.

A couple of days ago we told you that we got the first tweet from space sent using Tweetie. We told you at the time, that we are not sure if Mac or iPhone was used. Well, it seems that they didn’t use a Mac nor an iPhone, since NASA is pretty much Windows based. I was pretty sure that the tweet was re-routed, but now i tend to think that it wasn’t re-routed to the home base.

First Live Tweet From Space Sent Via Tweetie

We are not sure if they used a Mac or an iPhone, but this surely is badass. We got hello from out of space. Nasa astronauts sent the first tweet from SPACE.

We are not sure if they used a Mac or an iPhone, but this surely is badass. We got hello from out of space. Nasa astronauts sent the first tweet from SPACE. They got communication methods out there for sure, but it might have been just an uplink. They might have just sent the tweet back to base, and from there live for everybody to enjoy. Even if this was just a re-routing or a direct tweet, and Twitter didn’t evolved in the last few months, this is history right here.
