Good news! Mailbox is now available without having to wait in line. After 10 weeks of around-the-clock hard work, our engineering team has scaled the Mailbox service to deliver over 100 million messages per day (and growing). We believe we can now confidently handle new users as they sign up, so we’ve pulled down the reservation system.

Mailbox has been at the center of everyone’s attention for the last few days. Well, at least those of us who follow such things anyway. To be truthful, I can’t remember the last time an email app has garnered so much attention… Or any app for that matter. So, why? What makes this app so special that, as of this writing, there are reportedly over 700,000 people waiting in line (A line? I’ll explain in a min)to get to use it? That is indeed a great question. Created by Orchestra, the company behind the popular to-do list app of the same name, Mailbox eschews most of the regular functions of an email client and replaces them with new swipe gestures. Swiping a message in your inbox to the right archives it; swiping to your left saves it for later, which means it schedules it to pop up back in your inbox at a later more opportune time; swiping to the right and holding it deletes the message, and swiping to the left and holding it brings up a menu where you move or relabel the message.
