HOW TO: Get Free Tethering Without Jailbreaking Your iPhone

So you got that new shiny iPhone 4, and you got rid of your old device that was so easy to jailbreak and add tethering to? No MyWi? Don’t want to pay the extra “convenience” fee and lose your unlimited data package? We have an answer.

NOTE: this is really not a piece of cake if you have never played with xCode or your network settings before.

NOTE: you need to have a paid developer account or access to a developer who will register your device’s UDID in order to do this. Get creative, and get one. Either from eBay, forums or just get 4 friends and buy a dev account directly from Apple. ( 4 friends + you = 5 people – you do the math. The dev account costs $100 )

So you got that new shiny iPhone 4, and you got rid of your old device that was so easy to jailbreak and add tethering to? No MyWi? Don’t want to pay the extra “convenience” fee and lose your unlimited data package? We have an answer. Now its not a one click gets it done. But it will get it done. You’ll need a couple of things, but not really hard to find things. You either need to have or have access to a paid Developer account so that you can sign a built app and install it on a device. If you’re a developer, you already have xCode, and you know how to deploy an app onto a device. And the actual tethering part we will be showing you on a Mac, but I’m sure its not much different on a PC, we just don’t have one to do it on.

New In iPhone OS 4 Beta 4: Springboard Utilities Folder And New Wallpapers

Probably the most obvious change, is the presence of a new folder on the Springboard called Utilities. It contains 4 apps: Clock, Calculator, Voice Memos  and Compass. The funny thing is that the folder goes away as soon as you sync the iDevice because iTunes breaks the folder sync…

Also, Apple included a few new wallpapers that you can check out after the break…

A new carrier file has been added to iPhone 4.0 Beta 4, now version 6.2 up from version 6.0,  that has brought back the hopes of native tethering for iPhone users on the AT&T network.( Something every other network has already been enjoying).  Now when going to the network settings in the Settings.app you have a pop up for enabling tethering, and to contact AT&T either via a call or the website.

Going to the web site, and logging into the OLAM(online accounts manager) there are no tethering features yet to add. So next we will have to place a call during business hours…stay tuned for that.

AT&T: MMS Comes on September 25th

by its nature, this function could exponentially increase traffic on the network, and we need to ensure that some of our current upgrades are in place before we can deliver the expanded functionality with the excellent performance that customers expect.

Engadget reported the AT&T got the word out about iPhone MMS: it will be here on September 25th. Now i have no idea what AT&T understands by “summer” , but to me rainy days and rusty leafs is not summer.

We still dont have a certain date for tethering but they have a “damn good” reason for the delay:

A couple of months back , our AT&T insider told us the same thing : basically everything is ready, but we need to make sure all of our equipment will be ready. I mean, i might be a rebel or a dreamer, but from my point of view, but when you release something, dont you need to have at least the alpha version ready? How can you tell millions of people that you’re going to give them something and a couple of months later you say sorry it’s the equipment? AT&T?!?! Apple?!?! Anybody…?!?!?!

HowTo: iPhone Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 (AT&T)

Unfortunately this guide is only for those who live in US and AT&T . It seems that you need to have your phone legally upgraded to OS 3.0 and non-hacked, but this is not a problem, because the only way to upgrade to the developer iPhone OS 3.0 is well…. the legal way, and since this is not oficially out yet, you cant jailbreak it yet.

How To Enable Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0 :

  • Plug-in your iPhone
  • Download this file , unzip it and place it somewhere easy to reach ( i.e. desktop )
  • Go into iTunes, select your iPhone in the Source List on the left.
  • Hold down the alt/option key (alt for PC ; option for Mac) and click “Check For Updates” – you should get a file chooser dialog.
  • Find the ATT_US.ipcc file on your harddrive (Wherever you downloaded and unzipped it to), select it and click open.
  • You should see a progress dialog saying “Updating Carrier Settings…”
  • Your iPhone may hang for a split second, but once its done, unlock your iPhone and go to “Settings > General > Network > Internet Tethering”
  • Flip the slider to on.
  • If you’ve done it correctly, your iPhone will momentarily disappear from the Source List in iTunes and a new “Network Interface” dialog will appear.
  • Allow it to do its thing and if everything has gone according to plan, you should be able to disconnect from all other internet sources (Wifi, ethernet, etc) and still browse around and do whatever you like.
