Automatic Login to WiFi Networks Includes a New Safety Problem in iPhone OS 3.0

iPhone OS 3.0 has a bad “feature” which let karmetasploit attack you without user interaction. Be careful what you join.

All you will know that the Firmware 3.0 introduces a new feature that covers the auto-login to the WiFi HotSpot public, which also involves the automatic opening of the Safari. This beautiful novelty, however, could jeopardize our security. Let us look for the good functioning of this feature and understand what is the problem:

In an attempt to connect to a Wi-Fi network, the iPhone perform 2 steps:

  • Create a DNS query to the Apple site
  • Try to open an HTML file in the site itself

If the HotSpot prompts you for a password, Safari will open with a login form to be filled, otherwise, if the network is completely free and public, the iPhone will launch Safari and you can start surfing the www.

Because of this, theoretically, anyone could achieve misrepresentation of WiFi network with the name “FREE WiFi” rather than “Public WiFi” and, taking advantage of remote exploits that could draw from Safari valuable information stored in the cookies, such as logins for numerous websites.

So, just be careful when you choose to join a WiFi network.

HapticPro for iPhone OS 3.0

Haptic Pro is something i really missed when i moved to 3.0. At first when i start using the app i was sceptic and didnt really know if its a good thing to send repeated non regular small impulses to the iPhones vibrator thingy ( love the term, soooo technical ) , but using it i started to really love it.

Haptic Pro is something i really missed when i moved to 3.0. At first when i start using the app i was sceptic and didnt really know if its a good thing to send repeated non regular small impulses to the iPhones vibrator thingy ( love the term, soooo technical ) , but using it i started to really love it.

Now it was ported to 3.0 ( dont know exactly if its official or not ) and im not really impressed. Why? Some people experience huge slowdowns using the phone ( especially when they are typing an SMS, and the haptic feedback its not quite as realistic as it was in the previous FW.

You probably can get it to work as you want to , if you play around with the advanced settings. Just go to Settings> HapticPro>  Advanced Settings> scroll down to the duration sliders. Play around with the sliders until you get the effect you want , or at least one real close to the one you want to. NOTE: those are not the correct settings. I was just playing around.

How to get and install HapticPro for iPhone OS 3.0 :

First thing you need to do is to download the .deb file. Than SSH into your iPhone ( Mac or Windows ), and put the .deb file into /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall .Now just restart your iPhone and you’re good to go. IF nothing happens you should restart AND respring your iPhone.

HowTo: Fix Telesphoreo Cydia Repo in iPhone OS 3.0

If you recently updated to iPhone 3.0 and jailbreaked your device, im sure you noticed that some apps from Cydia are not working for you. There is a fix for that, its quick, simple and painless

If you recently updated to iPhone 3.0 and jailbreaked your device, im sure you noticed that some apps from Cydia are not working for you. First you need to understand that some apps were not updated for OS 3.0 yet , some apps are not fully functional and some apps work. Check the list here . But some of the apps that should work, still dont work on your device. There is a fix for that, but first you need to understand why it doesent work:

Many apps require root access and use a trick that involves the dirname command. This command was not present in some older packages in Saurik’s older repository. Saurik set up a newer version of his repository for 3.0 (which will merge back in to the trunk soon). The point is, many of you may have his older repository instead due to one of these reasons:

  1. You used an early Icy without its essential updates that do not fix saurik’s repo.
  2. You used apt backup to restore your packages and it restored the old repository.
  3. You did not accept some essential updates.
  4. Some other thing that I am not aware of. But the cause is most likely failing dirname command.

iPhone OS 3.0 Is Here! Download Links And How To Upgrade

Here it is folks! You can get iPhone OS 3.0 immediately, as of now, this very moment, from iTunes. Not sure how to do it? Open iTunes, making sure your iPhone is connected to your comp. Click your iPhone/iPod Touch’s icon on the left. Then just click the “Check for Update” button.iTunes will let you know 3.0 is available – grab it. Then just do as it says to continue upgrading. For some reason, some people i’ve talked to , didnt seem to get the new firmware. If you are in the same situation, you can download them from here: iPhone 1st gen and iPhone 3G .

Use Firefox to get it (or IE – bleah), as Safari decompresses the file when it saves it. Then, when the .ipsw file is on your Desktop (or wherever), go back into iTunes, hold down the Option key (Shift in Windows) and press the Restore button in your device’s tab in iTunes. iTunes will ask you what file you want to restore with – choose the appropriate 3.0 file you just grabbed.

For all you paranoid folks, here’s the rundown on upgrading:
* BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP. Of course everything will go smooth and safe, but IF something happens, you want to make sure you’ve backed up your contacts, photos, important SMS, etc.
* You WILL lose all Cydia apps. This is the same with EVERY firmware upgrade – iTunes has no idea you’ve got ’em on there, and sure isn’t going to politely put them back for you after you upgrade. This includes all Cydia app settings, etc. Backup your stuff from those too if you haven’t yet and need to.
* 3.0 WILL have an official PwnageTool jailbreak (yup, including Cydia) shortly following the release of the 3.0 firmware (which just happened), according to MuscleNerd when he demoed the 3.0 unlock.
* That being said, 3.0 will NOT BE UNLOCKABLE UNTIL FRIDAY. The DevTeam has already unlocked both the iPhone 1G and 3G running 3.0 with the new unlock tool, ultrasn0w, but they will not be releasing the tool until Friday. We’ll let you know as soon as it happens, but for now – if you NEED to be unlocked, do NOT upgrade until Friday. Otherwise, you can upgrade just fine today and still unlock on Friday.
* You DON’T need to wipe your device, go to stock 2.2.1 first, or anything – whether you’re jailbroken or not, unlocked or locked, you can simply press “Update” in iTunes to upgrade to 3.0 – and you’ll be fine.
* Like you really need a list of features first, but we’ve got em detailed here.
* iTunes 8.2 is required and fine to use. Jailbreak, unlock, all that will work fine in 8.2!

Download iPhone OS 3.0 GM

Download iPhone OS 3.0 GM right now. GM means Gold Master and its a final release of the FW which is released only for developers.

So the new iPhone OS 3.0 will be available June 17th, but the devs have access to it today. Well thats not fair right? Well of course is not, but they are paying for their dev account, and they need to get all of their apps OS 3.0 compatible before june 17th or the apps will be pushed out of the Apple AppStore.

My guess is that you want the new OS today as well. Well ok, download it from megaupload . This is the GM release, which it stands for Gold Master , the final version of the firmware released for developers only.Download, enjoy, and by the way use it at your own risk ( hmmm, if there is one…)

You should also be warned that you cant jailbreak right now, but that is in the process. Maybe it will be released by the time i publish this article. Anything is possible, and as far as i know, JBing for 3.0 is pretty much done, but not released. If you depend on yellowsn0w for unlocking your phone, DO NOT update to 3.0 now. Wait for further news…

iPhone OS 3.0 Coming in 6 Days, iTunes 8.2 Rleased NOW!

Apple just released the new iTunes 8.2 before iPhone OS 3.0 and this is an official sign that we will get the new software this month.

Did you check your software updates lately? If you didnt, than you probably want to know that Apple just released iTunes 8.2.According to Apple’s release notes, iTunes 8.2 supports “iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 Software Update,” and also includes “many accessibility improvements and bug fixes.” In April, Apple began providing registered iPhone developers with a pre-release version of iTunes 8.2, which was required to activate the later beta versions of iPhone OS 3.0. iTunes 8.2 is available now through Apple’s Software Update utility or as a free download from apple.com/itunes.

Right now we can say we’re 99.9% positive that will get the new iPhone OS at this year’s WWDC which is scheduled for 8-12 June and will be held at Moscone West, San Francisco.
