HOW TO: Install Icy On Your iPhone And iPad Running iOS4

According to most of you, Icy is not such a hot deal these days, because of the new Cydia update, but if , by any chance, you want to give Icy a try, here’s what you need to do…

About one year ago, RipDev team closed its doors and stop the development on tools such as Icy, a lighter alternative to Cydia. The project was picked up by WeAmDev, and it was released with support for iOS4. According to most of you, Icy is not such a hot deal these days, because of the new Cydia update ( see UI changes, what’s ‘under the hood’ and how to manually install it ) but if , by any chance, you want to give Icy a try, here’s what you need to do…

Icy: Now Open Source

Starting today, Icy is opensource and anybody can have access to the source code and improve it.

BigBoss: Icy Causing Problems On 3.1.2 Jailbroken With Blackra1n

If you jailbroken your iDevice with Blackra1n and you got Winterboard and SBSettings problems, you should know that this problems are due to the installation of Icy through Blackra1n.

If you jailbroken your iDevice with Blackra1n and you got Winterboard and SBSettings problems, you should know that this problems are due to the installation of Icy through Blackra1n.

GeoHot says, that he might have included an old version of Icy in , and when installed through Blackra1n, overwrites the new “dpkg” wich causes severe damage to the entire system.

If you still want Icy, you should install only Cydia through blackra1n, and install Icy via Cydia. However, Icy won’t be here for long, because we just told you that RipDev is closing its doors and stop the development on all their tools including Icy.

Best Cydia Sources

Some of the best Cydia and ICY iPhone and iTouch Sources around.

If you remember, a couple of months ago FSMdotCOM had an article called most comprehensive list of Cydia and Installer sources. There is a HUGE list of sources, pretty much all the sources you can find for your iPhone and iTouch. PwnCenter also has a package on their repository that will install pretty much all the sources in Cydia, which i usually use, because im pretty lazy, and i dont want to install all of them manually.

But the thing is , not all the sources are usefull. At least to me, so i decided to post some “must have” Cydia and ICY sources. Your iPhone and iTouch will be HOT if you have this sources and you use them wisely.

RipDev presents Icy: Cydia Competitor?

icy-big

Icy is our take on the freeware package manager that uses APT repositories to install and remove packages available in another free iPhone installer application, Cydia. The goal was to create a fast, lightweight and more slick solution that is easy and cool to use. Icy is only at version 1.0, but we’re already working on the improvements.

Slick Interface

The whole interface was designed with three goals in mind: fast, effective, cool.

Built on Open Source Foundation

Icy is built on top of the widely know open-source packaging system DPKG, the same as used in Cydia.

Light

The complete Icy installation only takes a little over than 1 Mb on your device as compared to 32 Mb with Cydia.

Cydia Compatible

Icy is compatible with Cydia — it will use Cydia (APT) sources to fetch package info and updates, then install the packages and see the packages installed from Cydia.

Network Efficient

Icy is designed to consume minimum network traffic. It will never refresh sources automatically — it’s up to you to decide when you want that to happen.

Landscape Goodness

As set by Apple in the upcoming 3.0 firmware, Icy is following the trend and allows you to browse installed packages in landscape mode.

Pricing and License

Icy is completely free to use and distribute.

How To Install

From Cydia: Add a new source http://apt.ripdev.com and then install Icy from the Packaging category.

From Installer: Icy is available in the System category of Installer.
