It was only a few days ago that I was having a discussion with a friend about the reasons the masses have when they decide to make the leap and jailbreak their iPhone.

Generally there are only 3 main reasons many have for jailbreaking their iPhone, everything else made available when you do is simply an added bonus. One reason is to unlock your phone, allowing it to be used on any network. Another is for on-device development and testing purposes. The third is for installing pirated apps [which we neither support or agree with].

In the case of the first reason there has been very little to celebrate as there has been no release of the main tool, ultrasn0w, for quite some time which means you’re out of luck if you have an updated baseband or newer device.

However the SAM tool from developer sbingner has you covered with a little help from iTunes thanks to a little playing around from Chinese Researcher Loktar_Sun.

MuscleNerd: One Step Closer To The iPhone 4 Unlock

Today MuscleNerd announces some progress, and tells us that everything goes according to the plan, and the unlock should hit us any time now .

Yesterday, we told you that MuscleNerd and PlanetBeing are cooking an iPhone 4 unlock, and they already got the baseband bootrom. They had to compare it with previous models and check for bug fixes and possible exploits.

Today MuscleNerd announces some progress, and tells us that everything goes according to the plan, and the unlock should hit us any time now. Next step is to keep the task backgrounded like they did for 3G/3Gs. Backgrounded task is the unlock. As for the jailbreaking part of the device, the upcoming update of Spirit , will jailbreak all iOS devices running iOS 4.

BlackSn0w, iPhone Baseband 05.11.07 unlock available in Cydia. This works with iPhone 3G and 3Gs.

Today GeoHot released Blackra1n RC3 which includes BlackSn0w. Blacksn0w it’s equivalent to ultrasn0w, which means it unlocks your iPhone, but it works on the latest 05.11.07 baseband.

Yesterday we told you Scott Yatur and his “successful” baseband 05.11.07 unlock. We also told you , that we got the exploit and we strongly believe it’s a fake, but we had to test it before we confirm it. Well… its a trick not a treat.

On Friday the 9th they will do a live preview of a soft unlock of the new iPhone baseband 05.11.07.

So those wild and crazy guys from AppoloHa1l (Murda wrote about them here)have made another announcement. On Friday the 9th they will do a live preview of a soft unlock of the new iPhone baseband 05.11.07.

Then Sunday at the same time that they say they will release their Jailbreak solution…they will also release the unlock.

Sounds pretty good to me.
