MuscleNerd: Evolution of iPhone Baseband and Unlocks [video]

Since the first iPhone in 2007, the baseband that Apple uses for cellular communications has evolved in terms of both hardware and software. Some of the changes were minor but others were quite drastic and obviously aimed at deterring carrier unlocks.

HOW TO: Use SAM to Unlock Any iPhone Regardless of iOS Version or BaseBand!

how to unlock any iPhone one any iOS and any baseband with SAM

It was only a few days ago that I was having a discussion with a friend about the reasons the masses have when they decide to make the leap and jailbreak their iPhone.

Generally there are only 3 main reasons many have for jailbreaking their iPhone, everything else made available when you do is simply an added bonus. One reason is to unlock your phone, allowing it to be used on any network. Another is for on-device development and testing purposes. The third is for installing pirated apps [which we neither support or agree with].

In the case of the first reason there has been very little to celebrate as there has been no release of the main tool, ultrasn0w, for quite some time which means you’re out of luck if you have an updated baseband or newer device.

However the SAM tool from developer sbingner has you covered with a little help from iTunes thanks to a little playing around from Chinese Researcher Loktar_Sun.

Ultrasn0w iPhone Unlock Updated With iOS 5.0.1 Support

A couple of days ago, we told you that the iPhone DevTeam will update ultrasn0w with support for iOS 5.0.1 and they will release it on Cydia, Monday. Apparently, everything was sorted out and working as planed, so the new ultrasn0w is available to download now.

NOTE: This new update just brings support for iOS 5.0.1 and it won’t unlock any new basebands. Basebands it will work on: iPhone 4 ( 01.59.00 ) and iPhone 3G/3GS (04.26.08 , 05.11.0705.12.01,05.13.04 and 06.15.00 ).

If you don’t want to wait for pod2g’s untethered jailbreak, and want to try the unlock now, you can use redsn0w to create a custom ipsw and restore your device with it. A custom ipsw will update your device to the latest firmware but it won’t update your baseband.

iPhone DevTeam to Update Ultrasn0w for iOS5

MuscleNerd announced that they ‘will coordinate ultrasn0w iOS5 compatibility update to come out *after* a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow’.

MuscleNerd announced that they ‘will coordinate ultrasn0w iOS5 compatibility update to come out *after* a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow’. Please understand that they won’t release a brand new ultrasn0w. They will just update the existing one with iOS5 support and old baseband.

Also, please understand that ‘after a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow’, doesn’t ( necessarily ) mean it will be released 3 seconds after the MobileSubstrate update is released. Once MobileSubstrate is updated, they will have to start checking compatibility and then release the updated (patched) ultrasn0w.

iOS 4.2.1’s Baseband Requirement Puts Your iPhone In Recovery Mode If You Try To Update Through TinyUmbrella

at this point, if you are using Saurik’s server or tiny umbrella and trying to restore 4.2.1 on an iPhone 4, you will end up in recovery mode and tiny umbrella will not be able to pull you out of recovery.

About a month ago we showed you how to use TinyUmbrella in order to update your iPhone 4 to the latest iOS without upgrading your baseband – therefore you could still use ultrasn0w to unlock. But that fun-ride is over… at least for now.
