The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple for “On-device offline purchases using credits,” which describes a system involving the purchase of offline credits stored on a given device that can be put toward media in the iTunes store even when not connected to the online marketplace.

“Slide to Unlock” Patent Invalidated by German Court

As part of an ongoing German patent struggle, Motorola on Thursday won a ruling from the country’s Federal Patent Court, which said found all claims of Apple’s “slide to unlock” user interface property invalid, though the decision can be appealed.

The architecture reveals that modules will appear around the time that videoconferencing comes to the iPhone. With Apple having just revealed FaceTime, the new emoji character modules should be on their way in the next year or so if all goes well.

New Apple Patent: Facebook Integration Into iPhone OS

Last Wednesday the Business Insider reported that a mobile industry insider confirmed to them that Apple was building Facebook features into iPhone OS 4.Perhaps “Apple’s new hooks into Facebook,” reported Frommer “will make this sync process part of the phone’s operating system and not just a feature of the Facebook app.”

New Apple Trademark: iTunes Live

on Friday morning, a series of “Made for” trademarks from Apple’s were published by the USTPO covering Apple’s iPod, iPhone and iPad. In an unusual move by the USPTO, Apple’s trademark filing for ‘iTunes Live” was published yesterday, Saturday May 8, 2010.

New day, new Apple trademark: iTunes Live. This trademark might not mean anything, but the trademark was filled under two separate classes:

  • Online retail store services in the field of entertainment featuring prerecorded musical, audio and audiovisual content
  • Entertainment services, namely, arranging and conducting of concerts and live musical performances

PatentlyApple reports that on Friday morning, a series of “Made for” trademarks from Apple’s were published by the USTPO covering Apple’s iPod, iPhone and iPad. In an unusual move by the USPTO, Apple’s trademark filing for ‘iTunes Live” was published yesterday, Saturday May 8, 2010. With that said, Apple’s dual filings are found under applications 85030139 and 85030144 which are respectfully covered by International Classes 035 for “Online retail store services in the field of entertainment,” and 041 for “Entertainment services.”

On May 5, 2010, the US Patent & Trademark Office published Apple’s latest trademark application for “Made for iPhone” under application 85025627. Apple has filed their trademark under the sole International Class 009 covering a “Full line of electronic and mechanical parts and fittings for handheld computers and portable and handheld digital electronic devices…” The full description of this class is listed in the report.

Patently Apple reports that Apple has been granted a patent for a multi-touch system that compares finger arrangements at the beginning of multi-touch gestures and discriminates between neutral and spread-hand performances. Gestures by the neutral and spread-hand versions of each chord are then mapped to separate, but intuitively related cursor functions or sets of commands.

Less-frequently performed functions and commands are typically assigned to the spread-hand chord, since spreading the hand from neutral takes deliberate effort. With these neutral and spread distinctions, a two-handed gesture set can be packed into a one-handed touch surface, or for two-handed touch surfaces, twice as many intuitively customizable gesture command sets can be accommodated.

But today, the US Patent and Trademark Office officially published two newly granted industrial design patents for Apple Inc. covering the iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touch which means that designs are owned by Apple and may not be copied. PatentlyApple reports that CEO Steve Jobs is listed as one of the inventors for these designs.
