800,000 New A5 Jailbreaks In A Little Over 3 Days

With the iPhone 4S/iPad 2 jailbreak being available for a few days now, the iPhone DevTeam has announced the number of A5 owners who have jailbroken their devices since Friday morning. The numbers as of Monday afternoon are:

  • 491,325 new iPhone4,1 devices
  • 308,967 new iPad2 devices
  • 152,940 previously jailbroken (at 4.x) iPad2 devices

Total: 953,232 new A5 jailbreaks in a little over 3 days

The reason these numbers can be so precise is that one of the housekeeping activities that happens when you launch Cydia is a query to @saurik’s server for the list of available SHSH blobs.  (Even if you have none on file, the query is still made).

Remember the cardinal rule of jailbreaking: never update your firmware until a new jailbreak is available.  This is especially true for A5 owners, who currently have no way of restoring to 5.0.1 once the 5.0.1 SHSH blob signing window is closed.

A5 Cache Issues Bypassed. iPhone 4S Jailbreak Accomplished

Yesterday, we told you that Pod2g has reported that he is having problem with the iPhone 4S/iPad 2 iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak because of processor cache issues. But thanks to Saurik, today the hacker reports that he bypassed the issue, and the iPhone 4S/iPad 2 jailbreak was accomplished

OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process. It took me like a hundred of tests to find the key. Hard for the nerves.

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablement/141-caches-and-self-modifying-code/

There’s no ETA for the release yet. We will keep you updated. Stay tuned…

Saurik Helps Pod2G With iPhone 4S/iPad 2 Jailbreak

Earlier today, we told you that Pod2g has reported that he is having problem with the iPhone 4S/iPad 2 iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak because of processor cache issues.

In an update to his earlier report the hacker says Saurik found one missing piece of the A5 issue puzzle, and the jailbreak might be closer than we ever hoped for.

I discussed with Saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he’s found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He’s definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

A5 Chip Benchmarks Show Graphic Performance Increase

The folks over at Anandtech have performed a set of GLBenchmark tests, which end up showing how much faster the A5’s GPU is compared to the A4, at least with respect to the graphics performance.

The folks over at Anandtech have performed a set of GLBenchmark tests, which end up showing how much faster the A5’s GPU is compared to the A4, at least with respect to the graphics performance. Although the results may not be exact since Apple may possibly under clock the new iPhone’s CPU compared to the iPad 2, the results should be somewhat representative of what is to come.
