Message Box Enables Facebook’s Chat Heads System-Wide [video]

New day, new tweak in Cydia.  A few weeks ago, Facebook has updated their iOS app, and one of the biggest change was the introduction of Chat Heads. Unfortunately, Chat Heads is only working within the app ( Facebook ), but developer Adam Bell has found a work-around, and was able to bring the functionality system-wide. Enter Message Box…

The trick, according to Bell, was isolating the Facebook app from the Chat Heads living inside it. Chat Heads inhabit a separate layer inside the Facebook app, so it was just a matter of finding that layer and making the rest of the app transparent. “The hardest part was getting this all to render on top of everything else,” Bell says, which means Facebook is always running on your phone. Apparently, Bell’s tweak doesn’t take much of a toll on battery life. “It doesn’t seem very resource intensive,” he says. “Only when you move the Chat Head is it actually doing anything.”

NOTE: A manual chat refresh timer is configurable in settings, though keep in mind a shorter delay will decrease battery life.

NOTE: It’s much easier if you have the Facebook Messenger app either logged-out, or uninstalled. That way you won’t get confused with the push notifications.

Message Box is available for free in Cydia via BigBoss repo…
