ATTENTION: Also read HowTo: Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w ( 2G & 3G )
So about an hour ago iPhone Dev-Team released the official iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreaking tools for Mac users ( sorry windows peeps ). The process seems as easy as it can get, but to tell you the truth i had to give it a couple of tries before i succeed so make sure you follow this tutorial step by step and read every step twice. Please make sure you follow this tutorial and do exactly as i say. If you mess it up, dont worry, start over ( pretty much your iPhone will be stuck in DFU mode ) and you should be good.
Step 1
Make sure you got iTunes 8.2 installed. (If you updated to iPhone OS 3.0 you have it installed )
Step 2
Create a new folder on your Desktop called “Pwnage”. Inside you will need PwnageTool 3.0 and the 3.0 iPhone firmware
Step 3
Double click to mount the PwnageTool dmg , drag it to the Pwnage folder and launch it.
Step 4
You will get a warning that the tool is free and its not for commercial use blablabla. Just click OK and proceed.
Step 5
At the top of the windows you will have multiple “modes”. MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE “EXPERT MODE”
Step 6
Select your iPhone or iPod from the three devices shown. When you select your device, a large checkmark appears over the selected device. Then click the blue arrow button at the bottom right.
Step 7
Next step is to choose the FW. On my MBP, it automatically found the IPSW. If PwnageTool doesn’t automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW… button.
Once found, click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.
Step 8
On the next window you will have multiple choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.
Step 9
The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Click activate the phone and Disable partition wipe-out. Click the blue arrow button.
NOTE 1: Deselect Activate if you have an iPhone legitimately activated on an official carrier.
NOTE 2: You may need to increase the size of the root partition slightly. My first attempt failed at creating the IPSW until I increased the size to about 695 MB.
Step 10
The Bootneuter settings are greyed out for the 3G iPhone. Click the blue arrow button.
Step 11
In the next screen, you can create custom packages so you do not have to manually install them later.
Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.
Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.
The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.
Step 12
In the next step you will have the option to choose the custom boot logos. I suggest you DONT install them. Because at any point if anything happens to the device, and you take it to Apple with the custom logos, you’ll pretty much be fucked. Thats the only way they could know your iPhone was/is jailbroken
Step 13
You are now ready to begin the pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.
Step 14
You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder you created on your Desktop. Now the tool is building the custom .ipsw file. It will take up to 10 minutes, so be patient.
At one point you will be prompted to insert you admin password.
Step 15
Next, you will be asked if your device was jailbroken before. You should click on NO. Clicking no will allow you to do a more thorough restore.
Step 16
If you device is connected ( make sure you connect your device ), it will ask you to turn it OFF. Than be ready to follow the steps on the screen in order to get the device into DFU mode.
NOTE: If you fail, it will show you a message. Click Yes. Unplug the iPhone from the USB. Turn it off, then turn it back on. Plug it back into the USB and turn off the iPhone when prompted. If done correctly it will prompt you with this message:
Step 17
Now open iTunes. It will prompt you with a message that iTunes found a iPhone in restore mode. Now hold the Alt/Option key and click on restore. Browse to the Pwnage folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created (iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click the Open button.
Now iTunes will restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes.
That’s it. Congrats!!!
iPhone 2G
For iPhone 2G, follow the same tutorial as above, but pay attention to this differences.
The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Click activate the phone and Disable partition wipe-out. Click the blue arrow button.
………………

NOTE1: If the Enable Baseband checkbox is not greyed out, checkmark it. This will allow the unlock to occur!***
NOTE 2: For the 3.0 firmware you may have to increase the size of your root partition slightly for the IPSW build to be successful. 590MB worked just fine for me***
In the Bootneuter settings, click Neuter bootloader, Unlock baseband, and Auto-Delete BootNeuter.app. It is not necessary to upgrade the bootloader unless you are really feeling the need to be on 4.6. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

…………………………………………………..
You are now ready to build your custom firmware. Click the build button to select it, then click the blue arrow button.

If this is the first time doing this, you will be asked to upload the 3.9 and 4.6 BL files. When prompted to search the web, click no.

You will prompted to browse for the 3.9BL file. Click Yes then select the file(BL-39.bin) from the Pwnage folder you created on your desktop and click the Open button.

Select the file in the Pwnage folder on your desktop and click the Open button.
***: After loading the 4.6 BL you may be asked if you’re a legit user. If you legally have ATT or an iPhone plan in a different country, clicking yes will not unlock the iPhone and activate it as your legal plan already activates it and there is no need for an unlock. However if you wish to keep the iPhone unlocked, when asked if you’re a legit iPhone user, click no
After both are found. You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder on the desktop.

Now we need a tutorial on how to install ipa's on the released 3.0 iPhone OS. The old method using MiPatch in cydia no longer works.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
i was just about to follow your steps. i downloaded pwnage 3.0 and the 3.0 ispw restore. the restore is a zip and when my mac unarchives it, it shows up as a folder, not as a box

Great instructions FSM.
I'm on a PC so I hope you post the same great detail instructions when Ultrasn0w is released.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Nice. Are the apps I had before from Cydia going to dissappear? I wonder if most of them are already 3.0 friendly?
June 19th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
hey murda, how are you? got a question for u.
Based on your Step 9 for the iphone 3g, are we suppose to check the box "Enable Baseband Update"? I rely on yellowsn0w and would hate to loose the ability to use the iphone. do I check this box or not?

Ok so I guess this version of Pwnage Tool doesn't work on PPC's cause I tried on both of my Power G5's and PT kept crashing. I did it on my Intel iMac and it was flawless. I don't know maybe it was just me.

Hey, murda!
You gotta add a link to the 1G firmware file, since your guide is for 1G and 3G.

June 20th, 2009 at 2:59 am
download the ipsw file linked in step 2 and put it in the folder on your desktop. If it doesent find it automatically you should browse for it and load it.

Will this work on the latest MBPs. Some were experiencing some usb port problems.
June 20th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Not me, the author(s) of most part of this tutorial.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

June 20th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
yea, i have the 1st gen unibody MBP and it works with no hassle. The difference between the 2 unibody MBP's is not noticeable so you should be fine. Follow the tutorial step by step, make sure you understand each step before you take action…

Hi,
i have the stranges problem ever. i downloaded the .ipsw for my 3g nearly 100 times. Everytime i try to customies the firmware in Pwnagetool i get "wrong firmeware bundle selected" or in German "Falsche Firmware ausgewählt".
I tried the original one i downloaded with iTunes and the one in this article.
its not working does anyone has a solution for this???
June 21st, 2009 at 1:47 pm
download the one i got here, wait for pwnage tool to scan for the fw, after it finds it, click browse and make sure you select the one you downloaded from this tutorial….
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:54 am
Thanks! worked just fine!
June 23rd, 2009 at 5:55 pm
i have the same problem
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Great Tutorial!! Thanks!!!
After creating ipsw, can't you just go into iTunes, hold down alt/option, click on restore, select pwnage ipsw and let iTunes do the rest to restore newly created ipsw? This may be a bit easier for those having trouble getting into DFU mode themselves…
July 8th, 2009 at 12:28 am
Great doc!..Everything works just as you described it.
Thank you!
