Five Apps That Help You Do Your Bit For Charity

Many of us strive to do good every now and again by supporting charitable organisations. However, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it can be difficult to find time to organise sponsored events to raise funds. But now, thanks to that handy little smartphone device in your pocket, you don’t have to go to all that trouble. These five apps let you easily find time to fit doing something great into your daily routine.

Instead

We all know that the money we spend on little unnecessary luxuries could make a big difference to others, but the Instead app shows you just how much good you can do by going without every now and again. Through micro donations of $3 or $5, the app lets you make a big impact simply by changing a few simple behaviours. Go without your store-bought morning coffee, and give a year supply of clean water to a child in South Sudan instead. It’s that simple.

Play to Cure: Genes in Space

Mobile gaming is a great way to stay entertained on the commute to and from work, but imagine if you could help find a cure for cancer as you play. It’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination, as the Play to Cure: Genes in Space app lets users analyse important genetic data in a fun and engaging way.  Developed by programmers from Facebook, Google, Amazon and the Rational Group, the gaming activity can help map information, which can then be used by scientists at Cancer Research UK to develop life-saving treatments.

Charity Miles

Fitness fanatics don’t have to rally around with a clipboard in order to raise funds for charity. This app lets you become a sponsored athlete with just a click of a button. All you have to do is download the app, choose a charity to benefit from your exercise, press start then get active. Charity Miles will track your progress and will pay 10 cents per mile cycled or 25 cents per mile ran or walked to your chosen charity. It’s the ideal app for giving your body and soul a good workout.

Budge Challenge

These charity apps are not only a great way to encourage you to stay fit, but they can also be a fantastic socialising tool as well. Budge Challenge helps to bring friends and family together, as they challenge each other with creative and entertaining tasks. They can be whatever you want, from running a race to winning a game of chess. The loser then has to pay an agreed small donation to a worthy cause.

Donate a Photo

Created by Johnson & Johnson, the Donate a Photo app has harnessed our shutterbug mania and turned it into a way to give back. Simply download the app, upload a picture and choose how you want to make a difference. The images are never used for commercial purposes, but for every snap you donate, $1 will be given to your chosen cause. You can even track all the charities you have helped and receive notifications when they reach their donation goals.
