First, you could dual-boot iOS and Android OS on your iPhones thanks to people like PlanetBeing, Sergio McFly ( iPhodroid ) and all the guys behind the iDroid Project. Now, thanks to developers @ Myriad, Android apps can run on Apple’s iPad via Alien Dalvik v2.0 which they announced as part of the company’s push for Android software on tablets, TVs, in-care infotainment and more.
Although the iPad support is likely to be the most eye-catching, Myriad has greater ambitions for Alien Dalvik than just putting Android software onto iOS hardware. The company wants to make Android a default coding choice for apps across multiple platforms, including ereaders, ICE and smart TVs, with support not only for games and other software, but multimedia including live sports, recorded TV shows and on-demand movies.
“From a user perspective, Alien Dalvik 2.0 is completely transparent and installed without user disruption. Users simply enjoy the same rich Android ecosystem they have become accustomed to via mobile on other key screens, such as playing Angry Birds on HDTV. This all while gaining faster access to a wider range of apps, thus encouraging a higher frequency of downloads and increased ARPU” Myriad
Developers, meanwhile, can use the same Android APK file as normal, with no modifications required to their code. Myriad will be showing Alien Dalvik 2.0 running Android apps on an iPad 2 at CTIA 2011 next week.
